The global fashion industry has been suffering in terms of sales and profits as a result of the economic crisis. This is the same story seen from industry to industry as companies try to deal with a recession not seen this bad since the 1930s. So in order to work within the parameters set by the struggling economies, new approaches are being developed to recapture consumer interest.
As people spend their clothing budgets on strictly practical clothing such as cheap t-shirts, high couture fashion is determined to display exotic fashions which pique interest and get people’s minds off the dire state of the economy. In the most recent attempt to add some innovative and light-hearted atmosphere, the News York Fashion Week models strutted in futuristic looking clothing. There were jutting hips and wide shoulders used in designs crafted out of high tech fabrics.
Of course, there were plenty of other designs too. BCBG, Nicole Miller, Yigal Azrouel and over 97 other designers displayed the newest designs from lightweight sweaters to studded garments. BCB used a lot of draping necklines and sleek styling in designs intended to look soft and seductive. Yigal Azrouel, on the other hand, is an emerging designer who used studs in the new designs. For example, studded belts added a contrasting touch to slinky dresses. Nicole Miller contributed to the futuristic styles with skinny pants and multi-fold shirts and plenty of patent leather.
Times are tough and the new fashions displayed at the New York Fashion Week recognize this fact. The mix of earthy and harder edged garment features combined with flowing trendy materials blends a harsh reality with hope for the future. As you buy those t-shirts and polo shirts which are practical and lasting, and can be worn at home and at work, you can think about the models on the runways who represent better economic times in the minds of the consumers.
